This is Martin's sixth postseason appearance, and only once has he hit above the Mendoza Line.īut for one evening, he outshined everyone.Gonzales became the 13 th player 24 years old or younger to appear in a game for the Pirates this season. The Pirates, however, shouldn't expect many more performances like this. ![]() “Probably couldn't have written a better script.” “It's definitely a special game, and I'm going to remember it for a long time,” Martin said, per Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Martin also called a good game behind the dish, picking the right spots for Liriano to unleash his twisting slider and, other times, having him pitch to contact. He made hard contact all night, seemingly reading the offerings before they even came out of the pitcher's hand. Usually known as a defensive stalwart with an inconsistent bat, Martin was locked in on Tuesday. The Yankees are watching the postseason from home, and their former catcher is playing hero on his new franchise's biggest stage in generations. Now? Martin may actually represent what fans once thought was a joke. But that narrative was a nice jab about the supposed "fall" of the Yankees and rise of the Pirates. The truth was that New York never made Martin an offer, and the Pirates were higher on him than any other team by far. One of the most amusing offseason storylines of last winter was the Pirates swooping in and pilfering Martin from the Yankees. Cueto and the Cincinnati bullpen largely pitched around him and nibbled at the corners, and he was also intentionally walked. The star outfielder went 2-for-3 on the evening, hitting two singles despite the Reds' concerted efforts to limit his effectiveness. Pittsburgh also got everything it could have asked for from Andrew McCutchen. In his first postseason at-bat of his 12-year career, outfielder Marlon Byrd hit a solo home run off Cueto, who gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits in just 3.1 innings of work. In one game of the 2013 postseason, Martin has nearly as many hits as he had all of the 2012 postseason with New York. The 30-year-old catcher went 3-for-4, belting solo home runs off Cincinnati starter Johnny Cueto in the second inning and Logan Ondrusek in the seventh. Tony Watson worked through a rocky eighth inning that included a solo shot by Shin-Soo Choo, but Jason Grilli pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to close it out at 6-2.Ĭatching the whole way was the veteran Martin, whose bat made as much noise as his battery-mate's arm. He had an 8-1 record with a 1.47 ERA in 11 starts at PNC Park heading into Tuesday night's contest, and he did all he needed to keep that success going. A year after being dumped off by the Minnesota Twins and removed from the Chicago White Sox rotation, Liriano's career has found a second life in Pittsburgh. ![]()

![]() ![]() Ledger lines help us go off the staff, above or below. If we want to keep going higher above the staff, then we’ll need a special line called a ledger line. This pattern continues through the entire staff. If we go from the A space up to the next line, we’re now on a B. If the note head moves off the G line up to the next space, then it becomes a different note that is one step higher. Anytime you see a note head on that G line, we call that note “treble G” on the piano. In music it became tradition to draw this G clef to remind you that the line going through the G swirl is the line for the note G. Notice how there is a hidden G shape in the treble clef? Sometimes the treble clef is called the G clef and that’s because it’s an old, fancy way of drawing the letter G. This treble clef is a symbol to remind you of something. Treble means “high”, so the treble clef is used when drawing any notes from this middle C all the way up to the highest notes. You probably also noticed that there are some new symbols on the staff in the video. When you put those two staves together it makes the grand staff. That’s because when playing piano music we need a staff for your left hand and a staff for your right hand. ![]() ![]() You’ll notice that the grand staff has two staves, which is the plural of staff. They also decided that notes could be on a line or on a space between the lines. The monks decided that if the song had a low note they would draw it down low on the staff and the higher the position of the note the higher you would sing. Originally, notes were drawn with square and rectangle shapes but today we use a round shape called the note head. You might be interested to know that when it was first invented a thousand years ago, the staff only had four lines, but today we use a five-line staff. The system they invented is still in use today and it’s what we use to draw music. They invented a way to draw the notes so they could remember and easily share with others the hundreds of chants that they knew. In fact, they knew so many chants that it became hard to remember them all. The monks knew hundreds of different songs which we call “chants”. They read the Bible, and they got together every three hours to sing and to pray. Here’s a true story of how the first staff was invented, in case you want to learn about the grand staff before using your free printable staff paper.Ībout a thousand years ago there were men called monks who lived together in a monastery. Step 7 - Bake at 400° F for about 30-35 minutes. (Use an 8 X 8-inch pan for thick slices or a 9 X13 inch for thinner pieces.) Then sprinkle the top with the reserved jalapeno pieces and sliced green onions. Step 6 - Pour the batter into the bottom of a parchment-lined casserole dish or an oiled 10 or 12” iron skillet or baking pan. Toss in 1 cup of vegan cheddar cheese and mix again until combined. Step 5 - Sprinkle in the jalapeño slices and green onions (saving about 1 tablespoon of each to sprinkle on top). Step 3 - Add the dry ingredients (cornmeal, flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt) to a large mixing bowl and give them a stir. To achieve their long-term objective of reintroducing rhinos into the wild in Uganda, it was felt that a sanctuary would be needed to serve as a protected breeding area away from poachers. The Rhino Fund Uganda was established in 2005 and collaborated with the Uganda Wildlife Authority to reintroduce White Rhinos into national parks in the future. Because of insecurity in the late 1970s and early 1980s, everything turned upside down allowing for tremendous poaching that ultimately wiped out wild White Rhinos in Uganda’s National Parks. The Colonial government and Uganda’s first post-independence government maintained strict anti-poaching regulations for white rhinos. The large population of Rhinos running free in Kidepo national park and Murchison Falls National Parks was a major factor for the tourism boom. The tourism sector thrived in Uganda in the early twentieth century due to the wide variety of wildlife. A century of conservation efforts followed, and there are now an estimated 20,000 individuals in the wild today. The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary has a fascinating backstory. Considered extinct for much of the late 19th century, a small population was discovered in southern Africa in 1895. The southern white rhino, however, is considered a conservation success story. The northern subspecies of white rhino only has two individuals remaining today, making their population functionally extinct. In zoological settings, southern white rhinos usually eat grass hay, hay pellets and pelleted grain formulated for herbivores. Because of this ability, white rhinos are pure grazers in the wild. These flat lips allow the rhinos to get low to the ground and consume the grasses with ease. These are integral parts of their feeding adaptations, since they enable the animals to graze on short grasses. White rhinos are known for their flat, wide upper lips. Southern white rhinos are found in grassland savanna areas in middle Africa and more prevalently in southern Africa. The southern white rhino is the most numerous of all the rhinos, with a majority of the population focused in South Africa. ![]() The northern white rhino is now the rarest of all rhinos, with only two female individuals remaining in Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya. While dominant males will tolerate females and sub-adult males in their territory, invading bulls will be challenged. Territories are often marked by spraying urine, spreading dung, foot-dragging and horn-scraping. Dominant males are typically solitary and occupy smaller ranges than females do. Larger, temporary groups of 14 or more individuals are often seen, usually made up of immature individuals or mothers without calves. Offspring usually stay with their mothers until the next calf is born. White rhinos are considered the most social of all the rhinos.
